Rowland Leate Holle (born 1859 – died 3 August 1929) was a talented cricket player. He was born in Australia but played most of his cricket in New Zealand. Rowland played important matches called first-class cricket for teams like Wellington and Auckland between 1883 and 1894.

Rowland Holle's Early Life and Work

Rowland Holle was born in Victoria, Australia. When he was older, he moved to New Zealand. In 1883, he worked in Wellington at a clothing factory called Thompson, Shannon and Co. He was a cutter and a manager there.

Rowland's Cricket Career Highlights

Rowland Holle was a skilled cricketer. He played for two main teams in New Zealand: Wellington and Auckland.

Playing for Wellington

Rowland made his first big cricket appearance for Wellington in December 1883. In this match, he showed off his bowling skills. He took 5 wickets for only 22 runs, and then 4 wickets for 20 runs. All these wickets were taken on the very first day of the game! Even with his great effort, Wellington lost the match to Nelson. It was a very low-scoring game where many wickets fell quickly.

Captaining the Auckland Team

Later, in the 1893-94 cricket season, Rowland Holle became the captain of the Auckland team. He led them on a tour where they played three matches. During this time, he played more as a batsman, focusing on scoring runs.

An Exciting Match in Auckland

In the last match of the tour, Auckland played against Wellington. It was a very close game! Auckland needed 13 more runs to win, and Rowland was the very last batsman to come out. He managed to score the winning runs, helping Auckland win by just one wicket. People thought it was "the most exciting inter-provincial match ever played in New Zealand."

Rowland's Cricket Writings

After the tour, Rowland Holle wrote a book about the Auckland team's journey. It was called Tour of the Auckland Representative Cricket Team, 1893 and was published in March 1894.

Life After Cricket

In the 1890s, Rowland Holle was part of the committee for the Auckland Cricket Association. This group helped organize cricket in the area. He also worked as a manager at another clothing factory in Auckland, called Arch Clark and Sons. In March 1897, Rowland moved back to Australia and lived in Sydney until he passed away in 1929.
