Roxana wasn't always called Roxana! It was first known as the "Village of Centreville." The name changed to Roxana on April 2, 1869. This change was approved by the Delaware General Assembly, which is the group of people who make laws for the state of Delaware.
For a short time, Roxana was an official "town." This happened when a special law was passed to make it a town. This law was first brought up in the Delaware Senate on February 16, 1909, and then passed on February 25, 1909. The Delaware House of Representatives also approved the law on March 12, 1909. So, Roxana became an official town in 1909.
However, Roxana's time as an official town didn't last very long. On February 16, 1921, another law was introduced to take away Roxana's town status. This law was passed by both the Delaware House of Representatives and the Delaware Senate by February 28, 1921. This meant Roxana stopped being an official town after only 12 years.
Keeping Roxana Safe
The people of Roxana are protected by the Roxana Fire Company Station 90. This fire company started in 1960. They help keep the community safe from fires and respond to emergencies in Roxana and nearby areas in southeastern Sussex County.
Since Roxana doesn't have its own police department, the Delaware State Police are in charge of keeping the peace and responding to calls for help in the area.
