Roxana Judkins Stinchfield Ferris (born April 13, 1895 – died June 30, 1978) was an American botanist. A botanist is a scientist who studies plants. She was often called "Roxy" by her friends and colleagues.
Roxana was born in Sycamore, California. Her parents were Moses and Annie Stinchfield. She was named after her grandmother, Roxany Judkins.
Education and Career
In 1916, Roxana Ferris earned a Master of Arts degree in Botany from Stanford University. Her teacher and guide was LeRoy Abrams. After finishing her studies, she started working at the Dudley Herbarium at Stanford.
A herbarium is like a special library for dried plant samples. Roxana collected thousands of plants for this research collection. She was especially interested in collecting seed plants and studying the plants of California and Mexico.
Roxana Ferris retired from the Dudley Herbarium in 1963. She passed away in Palo Alto in 1978.

Roxana Ferris helped write and edit several important books about plants. These books helped people learn more about the plants around them.
