Roxen is a cool lake located in the middle part of southern Sweden. It's not too big and not too small, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers. This lake is found just east of a much larger lake called Vättern.
Roxen is a key part of a natural water route known as Motala ström. It's also connected to the famous Göta Canal, which is a waterway that crosses Sweden. The city of Linköping is located just south of Lake Roxen.
Explore Lake Roxen
Lake Roxen is a popular place for many reasons. It's a great spot for outdoor activities and learning about nature. The lake's waters flow into and out of the Motala ström, connecting it to other important waterways.
Nature and Wildlife
If you love birds, Roxen is an amazing place to visit! The western parts of the lake are especially good for birdwatching. You can often see many different kinds of birds here.
To protect the wildlife and their homes, there are special areas called natural reserves. At Roxen, you'll find these reserves at Kungsbro and Svartåmynningen. These places help keep the environment safe for all the creatures that live there.
How Roxen Was Formed
Lake Roxen sits in a special kind of valley. This valley is called a graben depression. Imagine the Earth's crust as giant puzzle pieces. Sometimes, these pieces move, and a block of land can drop down between two faults. This creates a long, sunken area, which is what a graben is. Lake Roxen formed in one of these unique geological features.
Protecting Roxen
Lake Roxen is so important that it has a special international protection. A part of the lake, called Västra Roxen, was named a Ramsar site on November 14, 2001. Ramsar sites are wetlands that are important for nature all over the world. This means people are working hard to keep Roxen healthy for future generations.
