Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Roy is a small, quiet place in the southwestern part of Douglas County, Missouri, in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it's a settlement without its own official local government, unlike a city or town. Roy is located along Missouri Route 76, a road that runs south of the Goodhope area, near Missouri Route T. This little community sits high up, about 1,263 feet above sea level. It is also found about 1.5 miles west of the beautiful Beaver Creek valley.

The History of Roy

The community of Roy has an interesting past. A post office, which is a place where people send and receive mail, was first opened in Roy in 1882. This post office served the community for many years, helping people connect through letters and packages. It finally closed its doors in 1953.

The name "Roy" comes from an important person in the community's early days. His name was Lafe Roy. He was not only an early postmaster, meaning he was in charge of the local post office, but also a local merchant. A merchant is someone who sells goods, like a shopkeeper. Lafe Roy was well-known in the area, and the community was named after him.
