Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Roy Doty (September 10, 1922 – March 18, 2015) was a talented American cartoonist, artist, and illustrator. He was famous for creating funny cartoon drawings for many different things. These included books, product packaging, advertisements, and even TV shows. He was so good that he was one of only about a dozen people ever chosen for the National Cartoonists Society Hall of Fame. His former wife, Jean Slaughter Doty, also wrote several books for children.

Roy Doty's Amazing Life and Career

Roy Doty grew up in Columbus, Ohio. During World War II, he used his drawing skills as a cartoonist for the military. After the war, in 1946, he started working as a freelance cartoonist in New York City. Being "freelance" meant he worked for himself and different clients, rather than for one company. He never even had an agent!

From May to October 1953, Roy Doty had his own children's TV show called The Roy Doty Show. It aired on Sunday mornings. Later, from 1969 to 1972, he wrote and drew a comic strip called Laugh-In. This comic strip was based on a popular TV show at the time.

The "Wordless Workshop" and Other Works

One of his most famous creations was "Wordless Workshop." This was a popular series about home improvement projects that ran for 50 years! It started in Popular Science magazine and later appeared in The Family Handyman magazine. His drawings also appeared in many other well-known magazines like The New York Times, Field & Stream, and Elle.

Roy Doty also created drawings for many companies. Some of his clients included Buick, Black & Decker, Ford, Macy's, and Minute Maid. He even made children's newsletters for the American Institute for Cancer Research.

Roy Doty kept drawing funny pictures well into his nineties. In 2006, he said, "What could be nicer? I sit and draw funny pictures and people send me money." He passed away on March 18, 2015.

Awards and Recognition

Roy Doty received many awards for his amazing work. The National Cartoonists Society honored him with the Reuben Illustrator of the Year Award in 2006. He also won several Advertising and Illustration Awards over the years.
