Eaton began playing classical piano when he was only six years old. He was so talented that in 1937, he performed at the famous Carnegie Hall. He won a gold medal in a competition held by the Music Education League.
His success continued as he grew older. In June 1950, he became the first person to win the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Award, a special prize for playing the music of composer Frédéric Chopin.
Professional Performances
In 1951, Eaton made his official concert debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He played Chopin’s F Minor Concerto. The orchestra was so impressed that they invited him back the next year to perform a concerto by Beethoven. Also in 1952, he had his first major performance in New York City at The Town Hall.

Eaton was a dedicated student and attended several top schools. His education included the City College of New York, the Manhattan School of Music, the University of Zurich in Switzerland, and Yale. Later, he returned to the Manhattan School of Music to work as a music teacher.

A Pioneer in Advertising
After leaving the army in 1955, Eaton began a new career in advertising. He was hired by the company Young & Rubicam to write text and compose music for commercials. He was very good at his job. In his first two years, he created about 75 percent of all the music the company produced.
In 1957, Eaton was in a serious car accident. Doctors were not sure he would survive, but he recovered. He went on to work in advertising for nearly 30 years. He worked for companies like Benton & Bowles and later started his own business, Roy Eaton Music Inc.
