The Royal Hobart Hospital is a big public hospital in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It's located right in the city centre. This hospital is also a teaching hospital, which means it works with the University of Tasmania to help train new doctors and nurses.
The hospital has a special group called the Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation. This group helps find new ways to treat illnesses and improve health. Close by, you'll also find the Menzies Research Institute, which does more health research.
The Tasmanian Government runs the Royal Hobart Hospital. It's part of the Department of Health and Human Services. This hospital is the biggest in Tasmania. It also employs the most people in the state. It helps people from all over southern Tasmania. The hospital can care for about 400 patients at one time.
Many special services for all of Tasmania are based here. These include heart and chest surgery, brain surgery, and care for serious injuries. They also help with high-risk pregnancies and care for newborn babies who need extra help. There's even a special unit for hyperbaric medicine. People from northern and northwestern Tasmania often come here for these services.
The main entrance of the hospital was updated. A new underground emergency department was built. It started helping patients in early 2007. More building work continued around it. Recently, the hospital began a big project to make it even better. This project has a lot of funding, about A$565 million. It will add new areas for women and children. There will also be new facilities for cancer care, an intensive care unit, and a day surgery centre.
