The Royal Hospital for Children is a special hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, just for kids and young people up to 16 years old. It has 256 beds, which means it can care for many patients at once. This hospital is part of the larger Queen Elizabeth University Hospital campus. It opened its doors in June 2015 in Govan, taking the place of the old Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Yorkhill. The hospital is managed by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, which is part of Scotland's health service.
How the Hospital Started
The Royal Hospital for Children was designed by a company called Nightingale Associates. The building work was done by Brookfield Multiplex, who also built the famous Wembley Stadium. This new hospital was built on the same land where the old Southern General Hospital used to be.
Before the Royal Hospital for Children opened, another hospital called the Queen Mother's Maternity Hospital closed in January 2010. Its services for new mothers and babies moved to the Southern General Hospital site.
Building work for the children's hospital began in early 2011. It was first going to be called the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, but its name was changed to the Royal Hospital for Children. People hoped the hospital would be ready by 2014, but it officially started taking patients on June 10, 2015.
What's Inside?
The Royal Hospital for Children has different types of rooms for patients. Some rooms have four beds, while others are single rooms for one patient. The hospital was designed to include a special roof garden, partly covered, where young patients could enjoy activities outdoors. However, in 2016, the play area in the roof garden was closed.
The hospital also has a 47-seat cinema! This cinema was built with help from a charity called MediCinema and cost about £250,000 to create. It's not just for patients who can sit in seats; it also has space for patients in wheelchairs and even those in beds.
Helping Kids Get Better
The Royal Hospital for Children works closely with the adult hospital next door, the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Even though it has its own identity, it is connected and works as one big healthcare campus. The children's hospital has 256 beds and is spread across 5 floors. It took over from the Royal Hospital for Sick Children that was in Yorkhill, Glasgow. This hospital is dedicated to providing special care for children and young people.
