Rubén Dario Limardo Gascón (born August 3, 1985) is a famous fencer from Venezuela. He uses his left hand and competes with an épée, which is a type of sword used in fencing. He has won many awards, including an Olympic gold medal.

Rubén Limardo has competed in four Olympic Games: London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024. His younger brothers, Francisco and Jesus, are also fencers who compete internationally.

Rubén Limardo's Olympic Journey

Rubén Limardo was born in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela. He first competed in the Olympics in 2008 in Beijing, where he placed 23rd in the épée event.

Winning Gold in London 2012

At the 2012 London Olympics, Rubén Limardo won a gold medal. This was a huge moment for Venezuela! He won the individual épée event on August 1, 2012, just two days before his 27th birthday.

In the final match, he beat Bartosz Piasecki from Norway with a score of 15-10. This was Venezuela's very first Olympic medal in fencing. It was also the first Olympic gold medal in épée for any Latin American country in 108 years! The last time was when Ramón Fonst won in 1904.

This gold medal was only the second gold medal Venezuela had ever won in any Olympic sport. The first was in 1968, when Francisco Rodríguez won gold in boxing.

Later Olympic Appearances

Rubén Limardo continued to compete in the individual and team épée events. He participated in the 2016 Rio, 2020 Tokyo, and 2024 Paris Olympic Games. In the individual events, he was eliminated in the round of 32.

He had the special honor of being the flag bearer for Venezuela during the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympics.

Rubén Limardo's Fencing Start

Rubén Limardo started fencing when he was seven years old. His uncle, who had learned about fencing in Hungary, encouraged him to try the sport.

He originally fenced with a foil and used his right hand. However, an injury made him switch to using his left hand and the épée sword instead.

After winning his gold medal in London, he received a special award from Venezuela called the Order of the Liberator. He was also given a gold replica of Simon Bolivar's sword, decorated with precious stones.

Rubén is a member of the Piast Gliwice fencing club. He currently lives in Łódź, Poland.
