Winning Gold at the 2012 London Olympics

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Rubén Limardo made history. He won a gold medal in the individual épée event. This happened on August 1, just two days before his 27th birthday.

He won the gold medal by beating Bartosz Piasecki from Norway. The final score was 15-10. This was Venezuela's very first Olympic medal in fencing. It was also Latin America's first Olympic gold medal in épée in 108 years! The last one was won by Ramón Fonst in 1904.

This gold medal was only the second gold medal ever for Venezuela in any Olympic sport. The first was won by boxer Francisco Rodríguez in 1968.

Later Olympic Appearances

Rubén also competed in the team and individual épée events at the 2016, 2020, and 2024 Olympic Games. In the individual event, he was eliminated in the early rounds.

He was chosen to be the flag bearer for Venezuela. This means he carried his country's flag during the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympics.

Rubén's Fencing Story

Rubén Limardo started fencing when he was just seven years old. His uncle helped him discover the sport. His uncle had learned about fencing in Hungary.

Rubén first started as a right-handed fencer using a foil. A foil is another type of sword in fencing. But after an injury, he had to change. He switched to fencing with his left hand and started using the épée.

After winning his gold medal at the London Olympics, Rubén received a special award. It was called the Venezuelan Order of the Liberator. He also received a gold replica of Simon Bolivar's sword. This sword was decorated with precious stones.

Rubén's brother, Jesús Limardo, is also a fencer. Rubén has been a member of the Piast Gliwice fencing club. He currently lives in Łódź, Poland.
