Playing Career Highlights
Starting at Real Madrid
Rubén de la Red was born in Móstoles, a city in Community of Madrid, Spain. He joined the Real Madrid youth system when he was 14 years old. At one point, he moved to another club, CD Móstoles, but Real Madrid soon brought him back.
He made his first team debut for Real Madrid on 10 November 2004 in a cup game. His first game in La Liga, Spain's top football league, was on 22 September 2005. He played a few more games as a late substitute that season.
In the 2006–07 season, Rubén was part of the main squad. He helped the team win the league title by playing in seven matches. On 9 November 2006, he scored his first goal for the main team in a cup match. In July 2007, he signed a new contract with Real Madrid.
Time at Getafe
On 31 August 2007, Rubén de la Red moved to Getafe, another club in Madrid. Real Madrid kept the option to buy him back later. At Getafe, he became a very important player, often playing as a playmaker. A playmaker is a player who creates scoring chances for the team. Another former Real Madrid youth player, Esteban Granero, also joined Getafe.
During the 2007–08 season, Rubén sometimes had to play as a centre-back because other teammates were injured. He scored three goals in 11 matches in the UEFA Cup (a European club competition). One of his notable goals was in a 2–1 win against Tottenham Hotspur.
Return to Real Madrid and Retirement
In May 2008, Real Madrid decided to bring Rubén de la Red back to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. He scored his first goal after returning on 24 August 2008 in the Supercopa de España (Spanish Super Cup). He also scored his first league goal for Real Madrid on 21 September.
On 30 October 2008, Rubén was taken to the hospital after fainting during a Spanish Cup game. Because of this, he missed the rest of the season. After more tests, it was confirmed that he had a heart condition.
In June 2009, it was announced that Rubén would miss the entire 2009–10 season to monitor his health. On 3 November 2010, Rubén de la Red announced his retirement from playing football at the age of 25 due to his heart condition. He then stayed at Real Madrid to work as a youth coach.
International Matches
Rubén de la Red played for the Spain under-21 team before being called up to the senior national team. He was chosen for Spain's squad for UEFA Euro 2008, even though he hadn't played a full international game yet.
Before the tournament, he played in two friendly matches. During the Euro 2008 tournament, he scored his only international goal against Greece on 18 June, helping Spain win 2–1. Spain went on to win the tournament.
Coaching Career
On 20 October 2015, Rubén de la Red became the manager of Getafe's reserve team. The team was relegated (moved down a league) in his only season as manager, and he left the club shortly after.
