Rupen Chilingiryan (Sevag) was an Armenian poet, writer, and doctor. He was born on February 28, 1886, in Silivri, which was part of the Ottoman Empire. He passed away on August 26, 1915, in Çankırı. He was a very important figure in Armenian literature. Sadly, he was one of many Armenian intellectuals who faced great danger during the Armenian genocide.
About Rupen Sevag
Rupen Sevag started his schooling in his hometown at the Askanazian school. Later, he moved to Constantinople (which is now called Istanbul). There, he attended the famous Berberian School.
He finished school in 1905. After that, he traveled to Lausanne, Switzerland. In Switzerland, he studied medicine to become a doctor. While studying, he met Helene Apell, who would become his wife.
Return to Constantinople
After finishing medical school in 1911, Rupen Sevag made a big decision. He chose to return to Constantinople in 1914 with his family. This decision, unfortunately, put his life at risk.
On April 24, 1915, he was arrested. This happened at the start of the Armenian genocide. He was killed a few months later, on August 26, 1915. He was sent to a camp along with other important Armenian writers like Siamanto and Daniel Varoujan.
His Creative Poetry
Rupen Sevag's first poem was published in 1905. He is best known for his lyrical poems. These poems often shared deep feelings and emotions.
He also wrote many love songs. People loved these songs for their strong feelings and deep meanings. His poetry was known for its fresh and clear language. It also had different rhythms and a musical quality. His writing helped shape Western Armenian literature. He created a new and special style of poetry.
