The Ruby Roman is a very special type of table grape. It is grown only in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. These grapes are bright red and are about the size of a ping-pong ball.
Ruby Roman grapes are known for being super expensive! The first ones were sold in August 2008. A bunch of these grapes, weighing about 700 grams, cost 100,000 Japanese yen. That was about $910 US dollars at the time. This means each grape cost around $26! In July 2016, a single bunch with 26 grapes sold for 1.1 million yen. That's about $8400 US dollars!
How These Grapes Started
The Ruby Roman grape was first introduced in 2008. It quickly became known as a fancy, high-quality grape in Japan. People even voted to choose its name, Ruby Roman.
Every single Ruby Roman grape is checked very carefully. This makes sure they are the best quality. Grapes that pass the check get special seals. This shows they are certified and ready to be sold.
There are strict rules for selling Ruby Roman grapes. Each grape must weigh more than 20 grams. Also, it must have more than 18% sugar. There's an even more special "premium class" of these grapes. For this class, each grape must weigh over 30 grams. The whole bunch must also weigh at least 700 grams. In 2010, only six grapes were good enough for this premium status. In 2011, no grapes met the high standards!
