Rudolf "Rudi" Assauer (born April 30, 1944 – died February 6, 2019) was a famous German football player and manager. He played as a defender for teams like Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen. After his playing days, Rudi Assauer became well-known as the general manager of FC Schalke 04 for many years.

Playing Career and Early Management
Rudi Assauer was born in Saarland, Germany. He played in 307 football matches between 1964 and 1976. He played for two big German clubs: Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen.
After he stopped playing, Assauer became a general manager. This job is like a director who helps run the club. From 1976 to 1981, he worked as the general manager for Werder Bremen.
In 1981, he moved to Schalke 04 to be their general manager. He stayed there until 1986. During this time, he also briefly helped coach the team. After 1986, he took a break from football for four years.
Success at Schalke 04
Rudi Assauer returned to Schalke 04 as general manager in 1993. This second time was very successful for the club.
Under his leadership, Schalke 04 won the UEFA Cup in 1997. This was a huge achievement for the team. They also won the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) twice, in 2001 and 2002.
In 2001, Schalke 04 almost won the Bundesliga title, which is the top German league. They lost it in the very last minute to Bayern Munich. Assauer said this was the most disappointing moment in his career. He also helped build a new stadium for the club, which was a big project.
In May 2006, Assauer left Schalke 04.
Personality and Public Image
Rudi Assauer was one of the most famous people in German football management. He was known for being very open and direct with his opinions. People often described him as a strong and confident person with a kind heart.
He was also known for always smoking cigars. Because of this, he earned the nickname Stumpen-Rudi, which means Cheroot Rudi. Another football manager once called him a Kashmir Hooligan, showing his tough but unique style.
Personal Life and Health
Rudi Assauer lived with actress Simone Thomalla for some time. They separated in 2009.
In 2012, when he was 67 years old, Assauer shared that he was suffering from Alzheimer's disease. This is a brain disease that affects memory and thinking. He spoke openly about his illness in interviews, which helped more people learn about Alzheimer's. In his later years, he stayed out of the public eye.
Rudi Assauer passed away on February 6, 2019. His life partner, Beata Schneider, announced his death.
