Rudolf Baumgartner was born in Zürich, Switzerland, on September 14, 1917. He loved music from a young age. He studied music at the University of Zurich. After his studies in Zurich, Rudolf continued to learn the violin. He took private lessons with Carl Flesch in Paris. He also studied with Wolfgang Schneiderhan in Vienna. These lessons helped him become an even better violinist.
Founding the Lucerne Festival Strings
In 1956, Rudolf Baumgartner teamed up with Wolfgang Schneiderhan. Together, they created the Lucerne Festival Strings. This was a new chamber orchestra. A chamber orchestra is a smaller group of musicians. They play classical music together. This group became very well-known.
Teaching and Leading Music Festivals
