Life and Career of Carl Flesch
Carl Flesch was born in a town called Moson in Hungary in 1873. He started playing the violin when he was just seven years old. When he was 10, he went to Vienna to study with a teacher named Jakob Grün. Later, at 17, he moved to Paris. There, he joined the Conservatoire de Paris and continued his violin studies with Martin Pierre Marsick.
Carl Flesch lived in many different cities during his life. He settled in Amsterdam in 1903, then in Berlin in 1908, and later in London in 1934.
A Talented Performer and Teacher
Carl Flesch was well-known for his amazing solo performances. He could play many different kinds of music, from old Baroque music to newer songs. He was also great at playing chamber music, which is music for small groups of instruments.
Besides performing, Flesch was a dedicated teacher. He taught violin in several places around the world. He taught in Bucharest from 1897 to 1902. Then he taught in Amsterdam from 1903 to 1908. He also taught in Philadelphia from 1924 to 1928, and in Berlin from 1929 to 1934.
He wrote several helpful books for violin players. One famous book is Die Kunst des Violin-Spiels, which means The Art of Violin Playing. In this book, he taught that a violinist should be an artist, not just someone who plays fast and perfectly.
Carl Flesch's Famous Students
Many of Carl Flesch's students became very famous violinists and teachers themselves. Some of his well-known students include Ida Haendel, Henryk Szeryng, Ginette Neveu, and Szymon Goldberg. He once said that his favorite student was Alma Moodie from Australia. She was very famous in the 1920s and 1930s.
Special Violin and Later Life
Carl Flesch once owned a very special violin called the Brancaccio Stradivarius. These violins are very old and valuable. However, he had to sell it in 1931.
Because of his background, Carl Flesch faced difficulties during the 1930s. He had to move to London. Later, he was arrested in the Netherlands. Luckily, he was released thanks to help from a famous conductor named Furtwängler. Carl Flesch passed away in November 1944 in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Carl Flesch made a few recordings. One special recording was of Bach's Double Violin Concerto. In this recording, he played the second violin part alongside another great violinist, Joseph Szigeti.
