Early Life and Music Beginnings
Rudolph Isley grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He started singing in church when he was very young. As a teenager, he joined his brothers Kelly, Ronnie, and Vernon to form The Isley Brothers.
In 1957, after Vernon passed away, the three older Isley brothers moved to New York. They wanted to find a record deal. They recorded for smaller music companies at first. In 1959, they signed with RCA Records. There, they wrote and released their first big song, "Shout". By that summer, the Isley family had moved to Englewood, New Jersey.
Building a Music Career
After "Shout," the brothers recorded for other labels. They had some success with songs like "Twist & Shout". They also had a hit with "This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)" while working with Motown Records.
In the 1960s, Rudy and his brothers started their own record label. It was called T-Neck Records. They wanted to release their own music. After leaving Motown, they brought their label back. In 1969, they won a Grammy Award for their hit song, "It's Your Thing".
Rudy's Role in The Isley Brothers
While Ron Isley was often the main singer, Rudy also sang lead on some songs. After T-Neck Records started up again, Rudy sang more. The group changed when younger brothers Ernie and Marvin Isley joined. Their brother-in-law Chris Jasper also became a member.
Rudy was known for his cool style. He often wore hats and fur clothes. He also carried a cane. Rudy shared lead vocals with Ron and Kelly on popular songs. These included "Fight the Power" and "Livin' in the Life". He also sang lead on "You Still Feel the Need" from the album Harvest for the World. Another song he sang lead on was their 1979 hit, "It's a Disco Night (Rock Don't Stop)".
In 1986, Rudy's oldest brother Kelly suddenly passed away. This was a very sad time for Rudy, as they were very close. After recording two more albums, Smooth Sailin' and Spend the Night, Rudy left the group. In 1989, he stopped making music. He wanted to become a Christian minister, which was a lifelong dream.
In 1992, Rudy and the Isley Brothers were honored. They were added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Personal Life and Family
Rudolph Isley married Elaine Jasper in 1958. They first lived in Teaneck, New Jersey, for ten years. Later, in the mid-1970s, Rudy lived in Haworth, New Jersey.
Even after leaving music, Rudy stayed connected to his family. In 2004, he briefly joined Ronald and Ernie. They received a special award at the BET Awards for their long careers. Rudy was also the best man at his brother Ronnie's wedding in 2006.
Rudy and his wife lived in Otisville, New York, for many years. In 2013, they moved to Olympia Fields, Illinois, near Chicago. They wanted to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Rudolph Isley passed away at his home on October 11, 2023. He was 84 years old.
