Rufe, Oklahoma facts for kids
Rufe is a small place in western McCurtain County, Oklahoma, United States. It is an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own local government. It is about 10 miles northwest of Wright City.
History of Rufe
Rufe got its start a long time ago. A United States Post Office opened there on February 13, 1903. A post office is where you send and receive mail. The community was named after Rufus Wilson. His wife, Mattie Wilson, was the very first postmaster there. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office.
Before Oklahoma became a state in 1907, Rufe was part of the Indian Territory. This was a large area set aside for Native American tribes. Rufe was specifically located in Cedar County, which was part of the Choctaw Nation. People living in Rufe shared a lot with those in nearby places. Some of these places, like Rattan, are now in Pushmataha County.

If you visit Rufe, you'll find some cool natural spots close by. To the east, there's Pine Creek Lake. This is a great place for fishing or just enjoying nature. A bit further to the west-southwest, you'll find Hugo Lake. Next to Hugo Lake is Hugo Lake State Park. State parks are places where people can go camping, hiking, and enjoy outdoor activities.
