The rufous vanga (Schetba rufa) is a special kind of bird. It belongs to the Vangidae family. This bird is the only species in its group, called Schetba.
You can only find the rufous vanga in Madagascar. Its home is in dry or moist forests in warm, tropical areas.
About the Rufous Vanga
The rufous vanga is known for its reddish-brown feathers. It is a medium-sized bird. Vangas are a family of birds found only on the island of Madagascar.
Where It Lives
The rufous vanga lives only on the island of Madagascar. This means it is "endemic" to Madagascar. Its natural habitats are forests. These can be dry forests or wet, lowland forests.
How It Got Its Name
In 1760, a French zoologist named Mathurin Jacques Brisson wrote about the rufous vanga. He saw a bird from Madagascar. Later, in 1766, a famous Swedish scientist named Carl Linnaeus gave it its scientific name, Lanius rufus.
Linnaeus is known for creating the system we use today to name living things. This system gives every species a two-part scientific name. In 1831, another French naturalist, René Lesson, created the group Schetba. The rufous vanga is the only bird in this group.
Different Types of Rufous Vanga
Scientists recognize two main types, or "subspecies," of the rufous vanga:
- S. r. rufa (Linnaeus, 1766) – This type lives in the northern and eastern parts of Madagascar.
- S. r. occidentalis Delacour, 1931 – This type lives in the western part of Madagascar.
