Rugby is a small village in the Southern Tablelands area of New South Wales, Australia. It is located in the Hilltops Council region. Rugby is about 292 kilometers (181 miles) southwest of Sydney, the state capital. It is also 146 kilometers (91 miles) north of Canberra, Australia's national capital.

This village is in an area with a lot of thick bushland. It is well-known for raising merino sheep, which are famous for their soft wool. Over the years, some of the village's services have changed. The general store and post office have closed. The local school, which had been open for over 125 years, closed its doors in 2018.

Rugby's Beginnings

Rugby was first started way back in 1830. When it was founded, it had a different name: Mewburn. It was named after a family who were early settlers in the area.

How Many People Live in Rugby?

Rugby is a very small community. In 2016, a census counted 73 people living there. By the 2021 census, the population had grown slightly to 83 people. This shows that it is a quiet, close-knit village.

Historic Buildings in Rugby

Even though Rugby is small, it has several buildings that are important to its local history. These buildings show what life was like in the village long ago.

Important Places to See

  • The Colonial Inn: This old building gives us a peek into the past.
  • Rugby General Store: Although it is now closed, this was once a central spot for the community.
  • Rugby Police Station: This building served as the police station from 1922 to 1945. It was made of strong granite stone. After it stopped being a police station, it became the home for the school teacher. The old police cells were even used as bedrooms for the teacher's children!
  • Rugby Homestead: This is another historic home in the village.
  • Rugby Public School: This school was open from 1914 until 2018. It educated generations of children in Rugby.
  • Rugby Hall: Built in 1933, this hall has likely been a place for community gatherings and events for many years.
  • Churches: The village has two churches: St Vigil (Catholic) and St Aidan (Anglican). These show the spiritual side of the community's history.

Remembering History

The Rugby Memorial Gates are located at the local showground. These gates are a special place where the community gathers to remember and honor soldiers on ANZAC Day. ANZAC Day is a very important day in Australia and New Zealand, where people remember those who served and died in wars.
