Rui En (born Loh Rui En on 29 January 1981) is a famous Singaporean actress, singer, and host. She was once managed by Hype Records, a well-known entertainment company.

Early Life and Education

Rui En was born on January 29, 1981, in Singapore. She grew up in a family with her father, who worked as a property agent, and her mother, a housewife.

She attended Singapore Chinese Girls' School for both her primary and secondary education. After that, she continued her studies at Raffles Junior College (RJC). In 2004, Rui En graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a Bachelor of Business degree.

Rui En's Career Journey

Rui En has had an exciting career in both music and acting. She started her journey in the entertainment world after finishing her A Levels.

Starting in Modelling and Music

Rui En began her career in modelling in 1999 after completing her studies at RJC. She was managed by Phantom Management at that time. Later, she joined Artistes Network, a company under Hype Records.

In 2002, Rui En went to Taiwan to pursue her music career. She used the stage name 芮恩 (Ruì'ēn). Her first big appearance was in a music video for "Secret Code" (暗號) by her label mate, Jay Chou. They also worked together to promote Panasonic GD68.

That same year, Rui En released her first Chinese album, Rui Σn vol. 01. This album was a joint effort between Hype Records and Alfa Music. Jay Chou even wrote a song called "White Feather" (白色羽毛) for her debut album.

Rui En was recognized for her talent early on. She was nominated for Best Local Singer at the Singapore Hits Awards in 2003. In 2005, she and Taufik Batisah were chosen to sing the theme song for the Singapore National Day Parade, "Reach Out for the Skies," in both English and Mandarin.

After a break, Rui En released her second Chinese album, United Nations, in late 2008. This album was only released in Singapore, and Rui En wrote all the lyrics herself. From then on, she went back to using her original name, 瑞恩. In 2009, she performed at Singapore Day in London, an event for Singaporeans living overseas.

Her Acting Roles

Rui En started her acting career in 2002 with the MediaCorp drama No Problem. By 2005, she landed her first main role in A Promise for Tomorrow. The next year, a local entertainment magazine called I-Weekly named her one of the most promising young actresses in Singapore. She became known as one of the Seven Princesses of Mediacorp.

In 2004, Rui En joined the English sitcom Achar! for its second season. After this experience, Rui En decided to choose roles that fit her personal values. She wanted to focus on acting for the love of the craft, not just for fame.

Rui En started gaining more recognition for her acting in 2008. She played a social service worker and an AIDS patient in By My Side. For this role, she won one of the 'Top 8 Likable Female Lead Characters' awards.

In 2010, MediaCorp's Buzz named Rui En one of the "10 Faces to Watch." She also won several awards for her characters. For example, her role as Zhang Luoyun in My School Daze was voted 'Top 10 Favourite Female Characters' at Star Awards 2010. Her role as Lin Jiaqi in The Dream Catchers was also a 'Top 5 Favourite Female Characters'.

Rui En won the 'Most Favourite Female Character' award for her role as Yang Xiaodong in Happy Family. She also received the 'Best Actress' award at Star Awards 2011 for her strong performance as a widow in With You.

In 2012, Rui En won 'Best Actress in Leading Role' at the Asian Television Awards. This was for her role as a tough police officer in the crime drama Unriddle 2. She won her second 'Best Actress Award' at the Star Awards 2013 for the same role in Unriddle 2. In 2013, Rui En became the first Singaporean spokesperson for the international cosmetics brand L'Oréal Paris Youth Code.

Rui En also starred in a three-part documentary drama about one of Singapore's first painters, Georgette Chen. This series aired in April 2015 on Channel NewsAsia, MediaCorp Channel 5, and MediaCorp Channel 8.

In 2016, Rui En received the All-Time Favourite Artiste award. She earned this special award after winning the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes award for many years in a row, from 2005 to 2016. She shared this honor with Qi Yuwu.

In 2021, Rui En left Artistes Network.

Community Work and Giving Back

Rui En is very involved in community work. She sings the theme song for The Community Chest of Singapore, an organization that helps people in need. The song, "Listen to Your Heart," has been released as an EP in 2003 and 2009.
