Ruler X was an important leader from the ancient Maya civilization. He lived a very long time ago, in a period before Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas. Scientists call him "Ruler X" because his true name remains a mystery.

Discovering Ruler X's Tomb

Scientists found Ruler X's tomb at the ancient city of Rio Azul. This tomb, called Tomb 1, was located inside a large building known as Structure C-1. Finding a ruler's tomb helps us learn a lot about their life and times.

What Was Found Inside?

Inside Tomb 1, there was a special painting on the walls. This painting, called a mural, had writing on it. The writing included a date from the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. This is a special calendar used by the ancient Maya people.

The date written on the mural was 8.19.1.9.13. When we convert this date to our modern calendar, it is September 27, 417 CE. Scientists believe this date marks the birthday of Ruler X.

The Mystery of His Name

Even though we know his birth date, Ruler X's actual name is still unknown. The symbols that would spell his name have not been clearly understood by experts. This is why he is simply known as "Ruler X" or "Governor X."
