Rupa Bai Furdoonji was an amazing doctor who made history! She was the world's very first female anesthetist. An anesthetist is a doctor who gives you special medicine to make you sleep during surgery so you don't feel any pain. Rupa Bai Furdoonji worked in Hyderabad, India. She was super important in bringing the use of chloroform (a type of anesthetic) to India to help patients during operations. She was born into a Parsi family.
Becoming a Doctor
Rupa Bai Furdoonji started her medical studies in 1885. She was one of only five women to join the medical courses at Hyderabad Medical College. In 1889, she earned a degree called Hakeem. This degree was like being a Medical Doctor today.
Later, she went to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA, to get another medical degree. She wanted to learn even more!
Learning About Anesthetics
In 1909, a famous person named Annie Besant encouraged Rupa Bai Furdoonji to travel to Edinburgh, Scotland. She went there to get more experience and knowledge about anesthetics. At that time, there wasn't a special course just for anesthetics. So, she decided to study Physics and Chemistry at The University of Edinburgh. She knew that understanding these subjects would be very helpful for doctors who worked with anesthetics.
Important Work
Rupa Bai Furdoonji was a very important voice in two big meetings called the First and Second Hyderabad Chloroform Commissions. These meetings happened in 1888 and 1891. They were about how to use chloroform safely for operations.
From 1889 to 1917, she gave anesthesia in several hospitals in Hyderabad. These included the British Residency Hospital (now Sultan Bazaar Hospital), Afzalgunz Hospital (now Osmania General Hospital), and Victoria Zenana Maternity Hospital.
In 1920, she retired from her job as the superintendent of Chaderghat Hospital in Hyderabad. Her work helped many people and changed how surgery was done in India.
