The community of Rural Hill is sometimes spelled "Ruralhill" in official papers. It was located about four miles west of Gladeville.

Early Post Office

Rural Hill got its first post office on February 9, 1833. A.B. Curry was the first postmaster. This made it one of the earliest post offices in Wilson County. The post office stayed open for a long time, closing in 1903. It only had one short break in service.

Important Events

Rural Hill was a place where important discussions happened. For example, candidates for the constitutional convention in 1834 held a debate there.

The town is also mentioned in records from the American Civil War. In 1862, Union soldiers had two small fights with Confederate soldiers near Rural Hill. These fights happened on November 18 and December 20. Rural Hill was an important crossroads at that time. These skirmishes happened before a big battle called the Battle of Stones River.
