Russell Lee Campbell was born on April 2, 1969. He is a former American football player. He played as a tight end for one season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. This team is part of the National Football League (NFL). The Steelers chose him in the 1992 NFL draft. Before that, he played college football at Kansas State University.
Early Life and College Football
Russell Lee Campbell was born in Columbus, Ohio. He grew up and went to Wichita North High School in Wichita, Kansas.
After high school, Russell played college football for the Kansas State Wildcats. He was a key player from 1988 to 1991. In 1989, he caught 8 passes for 82 yards. The next year, in 1990, he caught 27 passes for 473 yards. His best year was 1991, when he caught 32 passes for 595 yards. He also scored two touchdowns that year.
Russell was very good at catching long passes. In 1991, his average of 18.6 yards per catch was the highest in the Big Eight Conference. Because of his great performance, he was named to the second-team All-Big Eight for 1991. He was also a strong student. He earned Academic All-Big Eight honors four times. In 1991, he was recognized as an NFF National Scholar-Athlete. After his senior year, he played in the East–West Shrine Game. This game features top college players.
Professional Football Career
In 1992, the Pittsburgh Steelers picked Russell Campbell in the NFL draft. He was the 179th player chosen overall. He officially joined the team on July 17, 1992.
During the 1992 season, Russell played in seven games for the Steelers. He was targeted with one pass but did not make a catch. He was placed on injured reserve for a time. This means he was unable to play due to an injury. Later, he was activated and could play again. He was released from the team in December but then joined their practice squad. The practice squad allows players to train with the team.
After the 1992 season, Russell became a free agent. This means he could sign with any team. He re-signed with the Steelers in March 1993. However, he was released again in August 1993. This marked the end of his professional football career.
