David Russell Batiste Jr. (born December 12, 1965 – died September 30, 2023) was a talented drummer from New Orleans, USA. He was known for playing drums in several cool bands. These included The Funky Meters, Papa Grows Funk, and Vida Blue.

Russell Batiste Jr.'s Musical Journey
Russell grew up in a family full of musicians. He started playing the drums when he was only four years old! He also learned to play other instruments. These included keyboards, saxophone, guitar, and bass. By the age of seven, he was already playing in his family's band.
After two years of college, Russell decided to focus on music. He joined a band led by Charmaine Neville. In 1989, he became part of The Funky Meters. This band was a new version of the famous funk group, The Meters. Later, The Funky Meters, without Art Neville, started playing as Porter Batiste Stoltz (PBS). In this group, George Porter Jr. played bass and Brian Stoltz played guitar.
Russell also had his own band called Russell Batiste Jr. and the Orkestra from 'Da Hood. He released two albums with this band.
He often played with organ player Joe Krown and guitarist Walter "Wolfman" Washington. They formed a trio called Krown Washington Batiste. This trio released a live album called Live at the Maple Leaf in 2008.
Russell Batiste Jr. played with many different musicians and bands. Some of these included Papa Grows Funk, Vida Blue, Harry Connick Jr., Champion Jack Dupree, Robbie Robertson, and Maceo Parker. In 1987, he was part of a New Orleans funk band called Nuclear Rhythms.
Russell Batiste Jr. passed away on September 30, 2023. He was 57 years old.
