A Look Back in Time
Russell Vale used to be the home and property of a surveyor named Francis Peter MacCabe. He passed away in 1897. The name Russell comes from his mother's maiden name, Margaret Russell.
His property was originally very large, about 250 acres. In 1904, parts of this land were divided into smaller lots and sold. The original house in Russell Vale was taken down in 1966.
Fun Things to Do
Russell Vale has some great places for sports and fun! It's home to the Russell Vale Golf Course, which opened in 1986.

Mining in the Area
Russell Vale Colliery is an underground coal mine. It is located under the Woronora Plateau. This area is part of the Sydney Drinking Water Catchment.
The mine has been operating since the 1880s. It uses different methods to dig for coal. Recently, some local people have been concerned about the mine. They have noticed cracks in the ground and other changes in the water catchment area. These changes might be linked to the mine's activities.
