Ruth Pinto de Souza (born May 12, 1921 – died July 28, 2019) was a famous Brazilian actress. She was a true pioneer, becoming one of the first Black actresses to perform in serious plays in Brazil. Ruth de Souza opened doors for many others and left a lasting mark on Brazilian theater and film.

Early Life and Acting Career
Ruth de Souza was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on May 12, 1921. She grew up with a passion for acting. In 1944, she joined a very important group called the Black Experimental Theater (Teatro Experimental do Negro), often called TEN.
The Black Experimental Theater
TEN was created to fight against racism and give Black actors and artists a chance to shine. At that time, it was hard for Black people to get roles in plays. Ruth de Souza was one of the first Black actresses to perform in a major theater in Brazil, the Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro.
Her first big role with TEN was in the play The Emperor Jones by Eugene O'Neill. She played the only female character, the Native Woman. Her talent was quickly recognized, and she even won an award called the Prêmio Saci for her amazing work.
Ruth de Souza continued acting for many years. She appeared in plays, movies, and TV shows. She was active in her career from 1945 until 2018, showing incredible dedication to her craft.

On May 12, 2021, which would have been her 100th birthday, Google honored her with a special drawing called a Google Doodle. This showed how important she was to the world.
