Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ruthsburg is a small place in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, United States. It's called an "unincorporated community," which means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.

What is Ruthsburg?

Ruthsburg is a quiet community located in Maryland. Even though it's not a big city, it has a history and was once in the news for an interesting reason.

A Big Discussion in 2009

In 2009, Ruthsburg became famous across the country because of a big discussion. The U.S. State Department wanted to build a training center there. The State Department is a part of the U.S. government that handles how America deals with other countries.

This idea caused a lot of debate. Some people were worried it would harm the nearby Tuckahoe State Park. They also worried about the Chesapeake Bay, local wildlife, farms, and the community itself. They thought it would change the area too much.

On the other side, some people believed the training center would be good for the area. They thought it would bring new jobs, about 500 of them, and help local businesses. More people moving to the area would also spend money in local shops and restaurants.

After much discussion, the State Department decided in mid-2010 not to build the facility in Ruthsburg.

Historic Places in Ruthsburg

Ruthsburg is home to some important historical buildings. Two of these, Hawkins Pharsalia and the Thomas House, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are recognized as special places that are important to the history of the United States.
