Ryuji Bando (播戸 竜二, Bando Ryūji, born August 2, 1979) is a former Japanese football player. He played as a forward.

Ryuji Bando's Football Journey

Ryuji Bando was born in Himeji, Japan, on August 2, 1979. He became a professional football player. He played for many different clubs during his career. He was known for scoring goals.

Starting His Club Career

After finishing high school, Ryuji Bando joined Gamba Osaka in 1998. This was a top club in Japan's J1 League. He often played as a substitute forward. In 2000, he moved to Consadole Sapporo. This team was in the J2 League. He scored 15 goals there. His goals helped the team get promoted to the J1 League.

Playing for Vissel Kobe

In 2002, Bando joined Vissel Kobe. This club was in his home area of Hyogo Prefecture. He became a very important player for them. In the 2004 season, he scored 17 goals. This made him one of the top goal scorers in the league that year.

Returning to Gamba Osaka

Ryuji Bando went back to Gamba Osaka in 2006. He continued to play very well. He scored 16 goals in his first season back. His great performance led to him being called up to the national team.

In 2007, Gamba Osaka won the J.League Cup. This was a big win for the team. In 2008, even though Bando had some injuries, Gamba Osaka won the AFC Champions League. This was their first time winning a major Asian title. They also won the 2008 Emperor's Cup. In the final match of the Emperor's Cup, Bando came in as a substitute. He scored the winning goal in extra time.

Later, his playing time at Gamba Osaka decreased. New players like Cho Jae-jin and Leandro joined the team.

Moving to Other Clubs

In 2010, Bando moved to Cerezo Osaka. This was a rival team in Osaka. He often played as a substitute. In 2011, he scored 10 goals for Cerezo Osaka. By 2013, he was not playing as much.

In July 2013, he moved to Sagan Tosu. He did not play many matches there either. In 2015, he joined Omiya Ardija, a J2 League club. He played many games in 2015. His team was promoted back to J1. However, from 2016, he played less often.

In 2018, he moved to FC Ryukyu in the J3 League. He played many matches for them. The club won the J3 League championship in 2018. This meant they were promoted to J2 for 2019. Ryuji Bando left the club at the end of the 2018 season.

Playing for His Country

Ryuji Bando also played for Japan's national football teams.

Youth National Teams

He played for Japan's Under-19 and Under-20 teams. He was part of the Japan U-20 national team that played in the 1999 World Youth Championship in Nigeria. His team finished as runners-up in that tournament.

Senior National Team Debut

Bando made his first appearance for the senior national team on October 4, 2006. This was in a friendly match against Ghana. He came into the game in the 67th minute.

His first goal for Japan came on October 11, 2006. It was during a 2007 Asian Cup qualification match against India. He scored two goals in that game, helping Japan win 3-0. He was chosen for the 2007 Asian Cup finals. However, he had to pull out because of an injury.
