The Story of Ry-Krisp
How It Started
Ry-Krisp began in 1899. It was a popular snack in the United States. The main factory was in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1926, a company called Ralston Purina bought the Ry-Krisp plant.
Changing Hands
Over the years, Ry-Krisp changed owners a few times. In 1994, the part of Ralston Purina that made food products became a new company called Ralcorp Holdings. Ry-Krisp was part of this new company. Later, in 2013, a larger food company named ConAgra Foods bought Ralcorp.
Why Production Stopped
In January 2015, ConAgra Foods announced that the factory making Ry-Krisp would close. They said this was because fewer people were buying the product. This meant Ry-Krisp would no longer be made.
However, in April 2015, a new company called RyKrisp Inc. bought the brand. They wanted to bring Ry-Krisp back to stores. They planned to find a new company to make the crackers.
A Legal Challenge
RyKrisp Inc. faced some problems getting production started. They had legal issues with a baking company called Distinctive Foods. RyKrisp Inc. said that Distinctive Foods did not handle their equipment properly. They also claimed Distinctive Foods tried to stop them from working with other bakers.
RyKrisp Inc. took Distinctive Foods to court. In October 2019, a jury decided in favor of RyKrisp Inc. The court ordered Distinctive Foods to pay RyKrisp Inc. a large amount of money. This was to cover damages and lost profits.
The Final Decision
Even after winning the court case, RyKrisp Inc. faced difficulties. On May 23, 2024, the owners of Ry-Krisp shared that they could not continue with production. This was due to the high costs of the legal case and a lack of money. So, Ry-Krisp crackers are no longer being made.
