Playing Baseball: Ryan Bowen's Career
Ryan Bowen started his professional baseball journey when he was picked by the Houston Astros. This happened in the first round of the 1986 Major League Baseball Draft. Being "drafted" means a team chose him to play for them.
Climbing the Ranks
After being drafted, Ryan spent four years playing in the Astros' "farm system." This is like a training program for young players. They play for smaller teams to get better and prepare for the major leagues.
Major League Debut
In 1991, Ryan made his "major league debut." This means he played his first game in Major League Baseball. In that game, he pitched very well against the St. Louis Cardinals. He didn't allow them to get any hits for five innings. This is called "no-hitting" a team.
Moving to a New Team
After playing for the Astros for parts of two seasons, Ryan was chosen by a new team. The Florida Marlins picked him in the third round of the 1992 MLB Expansion Draft. An "expansion draft" happens when new teams join the league. They get to pick players from other teams. Ryan then played for the Marlins for the next three seasons.
Playing After MLB
After his time in Major League Baseball, Ryan played two more seasons in the minor leagues. In 1998, he played baseball in Taiwan. He then tried to make a comeback in 1999 with the Sacramento Steelheads. They were part of the Western Baseball League. Ryan Bowen retired from playing baseball after the 1999 season.
