Ryan James (born 20 July 1991) is an Australian former rugby league player. He played as a prop (prop) and second-row (second-row) forward. He played for the Gold Coast Titans in the National Rugby League (NRL).

He also played for the Brisbane Broncos, Canberra Raiders, and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in the NRL. Ryan also represented the Indigenous All Stars and Country Origin teams.

Rugby League Career

Starting Out

Ryan James began his rugby league journey playing for the Bilambil Jets junior team. He went to Tweed River High School. In 2006, he played for the NSW CHS under 15's schoolboy team.

In 2008, Ryan attended Palm Beach Currumbin High School. He helped his school win the ARL Schoolboy Cup. They beat Matraville Sports High School 24–22 in the final. Ryan was named player of the year and won the Peter Sterling Medal. Later that year, he played for the Queensland Schoolboys. He was then chosen for the Australian Schoolboys team.

Playing for the Gold Coast Titans

Ryan James made his first appearance in the NRL in 2010. He played for the Gold Coast Titans in round 14 of the season. The Gold Coast team won 28–14 against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. Ryan played well in his first game.

He played four games in the 2010 NRL season, always coming off the bench. He was named in the 2010 National Youth Competition team of the year as a second-rower.

In 2011, Ryan played in the 2011 All Stars match for the Indigenous All Stars. He played 14 games for the Titans during the 2011 NRL season. That year, the Gold Coast team finished last.

In 2016, Ryan scored his 13th try of the season in a finals game. This broke a 76-year-old record for the most tries scored by a front rower in one season!

During the 2017 NRL season, the team faced some tough times. There were reports of disagreements between the coach and a star player. Ryan spoke to the media, defending his team and coach. The coach was later replaced.

Ryan was named co-captain along with his new teammate Kevin Proctor. He also signed a new contract to stay with the Titans until the end of 2020.

In the 2018 NRL season, Ryan played 23 games. The Gold Coast team finished 14th that year.

Ryan played 6 games for the Gold Coast in the 2019 NRL season. It was a difficult year for the club. The head coach was replaced during the season. The Gold Coast team won only 4 games and finished last.

On October 6, 2019, Ryan was asked to give the Welcome to Country speech before the 2019 NRL Grand Final. During the speech, he had a moment where he paused. This led to some discussion. A major sponsor of the Titans initially said they would end their sponsorship. However, they later changed their minds and apologized to Ryan.

On December 11, 2019, Ryan shared his thoughts on the Australian National Anthem for the 2020 Indigenous All Stars game. On January 31, 2020, Ryan got a serious knee injury (ACL) during pre-season training. This meant he could not play for a long time. Everyone at the club supported him during his recovery.

Ryan then joined the Canberra Raiders for two years, starting in 2021.

Time with Canberra and Other Teams

In round 1 of the 2021 NRL season, Ryan played his first game for Canberra. He even scored a try in their 30-12 win against Wests Tigers.

In round 12, Ryan was sent off the field for a short time (sin bin) for a foul play during a game against the Sydney Roosters. He returned later in the game and scored a try.

On August 10, 2021, Ryan joined the Canterbury-Bankstown team for two weeks on a loan. He played his first game for Canterbury in round 22.

On September 23, 2021, Ryan signed a contract to join the Brisbane Broncos. He was released early from his Canberra contract to make this move.
