Ryan Karim Buchanan is an American lawyer who served as the top government lawyer, known as the United States attorney, for the Northern District of Georgia from 2022 to 2025. In this important role, he represented the United States in legal cases within that area.
Education and Early Life
Ryan Buchanan studied at Samford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 2001. This is usually the first degree you get from a university. He then went on to study law at the Vanderbilt University Law School, earning his Juris Doctor (JD) degree in 2005. A JD is the special degree needed to become a lawyer.
Legal Career
After finishing law school, Buchanan began his career in the legal field.
Early Legal Work
From 2005 to 2006, Ryan Buchanan worked as a law clerk for Judge Inge Prytz Johnson. A law clerk helps a judge by doing research and writing legal documents. After that, from 2006 to 2010, he worked as an associate lawyer at a law firm called McGuireWoods. An associate lawyer is a lawyer who works for a firm but is not yet a partner.
In 2010, he joined the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia. This office is part of the U.S. government and handles federal legal cases.
Serving as U.S. Attorney
On November 12, 2021, President Joe Biden announced that he wanted Ryan Buchanan to become the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. This process is called a nomination.
His nomination was officially sent to the United States Senate on November 15, 2021. The Senate is a part of the U.S. Congress that must approve many important government positions. On January 13, 2022, the Senate Judiciary Committee, a special group of senators, reviewed his nomination and approved it.
Finally, on April 27, 2022, the full Senate confirmed his nomination by a voice vote. A voice vote means that senators say "aye" or "nay" out loud, and if most agree, the nomination passes quickly. He officially started his job on May 2, 2022, after being sworn into office. He served in this role until he resigned on January 19, 2025.
