Ryan grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. He started learning the trumpet from his dad, Larry Kisor, when he was very young. By age ten, he was already playing in a local dance band called the Eddie Skeets Orchestra.

Early Music Journey

When Ryan was 12, he began taking classical trumpet lessons. At 15, he met famous jazz musician Clark Terry at a summer jazz camp. Ryan also played with special all-star high school bands. In 1990, when he was 17, Ryan won a big trumpet competition. This was the Thelonious Monk Institute's trumpet contest. Other talented musicians like Nicholas Payton also competed that year.

Professional Career

After winning the contest, Ryan signed with Columbia Records. He released his first two albums, Minor Mutiny in 1992 and On the One in 1993. Later, Ryan studied music at the Manhattan School of Music. There, he learned from great teachers like Lew Soloff.

He has played with many famous groups and musicians in New York. These include the Mingus Big Band and the Michel Camilo Big Band. He also performed with jazz legends like Gerry Mulligan, Wynton Marsalis, and Horace Silver. Since 1994, Ryan has been a member of the amazing Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He has also released many albums where he is the main bandleader. His younger brother, Justin Kisor, is also a talented jazz trumpeter. They have performed together many times.
