Ryeisha Rochelle Berrain (born November 25, 1990), better known as Rye Rye, is an American rapper, singer, dancer, and actress. She is known for her high-energy hip hop and dance music.

Rye Rye signed with the record label N.E.E.T. Recordings, which was started by the artist M.I.A.. She released her first mixtape, RYEot PowRR, in 2011. Her first album, Go! Pop! Bang!, came out in 2012.

In 2009, MSNBC named Rye Rye as one of the top young singers to watch. In 2011, Billboard magazine included her on its "21 Under 21" list of talented young musicians. Rye Rye also started an acting career, appearing in the 2012 movie 21 Jump Street.

Music Career

How She Got Started

Rye Rye started performing when she was 16 years old. She loved to sing and dance and felt she could be successful in the music industry. She used to write poems and stories, and one day she started turning them into songs.

She met a musician named Blaqstarr, who was a friend of her sister. She left a rap verse on his answering machine, and they started working together. Her song "Shake It To The Ground," which she made with Blaqstarr, became a club hit in 2006.

The famous artist M.I.A. heard the song and wanted to meet Rye Rye. At the time, Rye Rye was still in high school. She didn't know who M.I.A. or the producer Diplo were when she met them, but M.I.A. told her she had been looking for her. Soon after, Rye Rye began touring with M.I.A. and appeared in the music video for M.I.A.'s hit song "Paper Planes."

Her First Album: Go! Pop! Bang!

Rye Rye was the first artist to sign with M.I.A.'s record label, N.E.E.T. Recordings. Her first album, Go! Pop! Bang!, was planned for 2009 but was delayed. While waiting for her album to be released, she worked with many other artists.

Her single "Bang", which featured M.I.A., was on the soundtrack for the movie Fast & Furious. Rolling Stone magazine called the track "gloriously showoffy."

In 2011, Rye Rye released a mixtape called RYEot PowRR for free online. The first official single from her album was "Sunshine", which also featured M.I.A. Her next single, "Never Will Be Mine", featured the singer Robyn. The song was a hit on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart.

Rye Rye's album Go! Pop! Bang! was finally released on May 15, 2012. Another single from the album, "Boom Boom," also became a dance hit.

Working Independently

In a 2016 interview, Rye Rye shared that she had left N.E.E.T. Recordings. She explained that the label wasn't very active and that M.I.A. was busy with her own career. After leaving, Rye Rye planned to release her music on her own.

Acting Career

Besides music, Rye Rye has also acted in movies. She played the character Jr. Jr. in the comedy film 21 Jump Street and its sequel, 22 Jump Street. She also recorded the main theme song for 21 Jump Street with the singer Esthero.

Music Style

Rye Rye is known for her energetic, "hardcore club sound" that mixes hip hop and dance music. Her style is often compared to Baltimore club music, a type of dance music from her hometown.

M.I.A. was a big influence on her music and fashion. Rye Rye is also a fan of fashion designer Jeremy Scott. Critics have praised her music for being fun and perfect for parties. Paper magazine said her album "will take over car stereos one impossibly ear-catching kinetic party jam at a time."
