Ryeisha Berrain (born in Baltimore, Maryland, on November 25, 1990), known as Rye Rye, is an American artist. She is a talented rapper, singer, dancer, and actress. Rye Rye signed with N.E.E.T. Recordings and released her first mixtape, RYEot PowRR, in 2011. Her first album, Go! Pop! Bang!, came out on May 15, 2012.

In 2009, MSNBC named Rye Rye one of the "Top of the pops! Up-and-coming young singers." Then, in 2011, Billboard magazine included her in their "21 Under 21" list. Rye Rye also started acting, appearing in the 2012 movie 21 Jump Street.

Rye Rye's Music Journey

Starting in Music

Rye Rye began performing when she was 16 years old. She wanted to join the music industry because she saw a lot of possibilities there. She shared, "I love performing, singing, dancing, all of that, and I felt that given the opportunity I would destroy it."

She met a musician named Blaqstarr, who was a friend of her sister. Rye Rye started working with him on her early songs after leaving a rap verse on his answering machine. She explained, "I used to like to write poetry and stories. One day I was home, bored, and started to compose songs."

Her song "Shake It To The Ground," made with Blaqstarr, became popular in clubs in 2006. People in her local area thought Rye Rye could become a big new female artist in hip hop music.

Meeting M.I.A. and Touring

In 2006 or 2007, Blaqstarr set up a meeting for Rye Rye with artists M.I.A. and Diplo. M.I.A. had heard "Shake It To The Ground" and was impressed. Blaqstarr told Rye Rye someone wanted to meet her but didn't say who. Even though Rye Rye didn't know who M.I.A. and Diplo were at first, M.I.A. told her she had been looking for her.

At that time, Rye Rye was a junior in high school. She went on tour with M.I.A. during the KALA Tour in late 2007. This included opening shows for M.I.A. in the United Kingdom. They also toured together in early 2008 for the People Vs. Money Tour. Rye Rye and M.I.A. both appeared in M.I.A.'s 2007 music video for the song "Paper Planes."

Releasing Go! Pop! Bang!

Rye Rye was the very first artist to sign with M.I.A.'s record label, N.E.E.T. Recordings, which was part of Interscope Records. Her first album, Go! Pop! Bang!, was planned for release in March 2009, but it was delayed. During this time, she recorded guest parts for other songs.

She performed the song "Get it from my Mama" live with Blaqstarr and M.I.A. Other songs she recorded included "Bang" with M.I.A. and "Wassup Wassup" with DJ Diplo. A music video for "Shake It To The Ground" was also created. Rye Rye appeared on a remix of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" with Afrikan Boy. She performed this song during her 2007 live shows.

In an interview, M.I.A. called Rye Rye "the voice of Baltimore." Rye Rye also worked with The Neptunes while making her first album. In October 2008, she performed "Paper Planes" with Pharrell Williams and M.I.A. at a big party in Brooklyn.

Rye Rye was featured on the Crookers' album Tons of Friends on the song "Hip Hop Changed." She also appeared on a track called "Exotic On The Speaker" by Soulico and "Have You Heard?" by Ceci Bastida. Her song "X Girl" was on Teenage Bad Girl's album.

Rye Rye's song "Bang" (featuring M.I.A.) was included on the Fast & Furious movie soundtrack. She released the music video for "Bang" in 2009, which M.I.A. directed. Rolling Stone magazine called the song "gloriously showoffy." Rye Rye's performance at SXSW in 2010 was very popular. She also opened for the band The Gossip in April 2010.

On February 9, 2011, Rye Rye released her mixtape RYEot PowRR for free download. It came with a video for her remix of Miley Cyrus' "Party in the U.S.A.". After a few changes, Go! Pop! Bang! was officially set to be released on February 22, 2011. However, it was delayed again and finally came out in 2012.

The first song from Go! Pop! Bang! was "Sunshine", released on October 5, 2010. A music video with M.I.A. was filmed and released on October 8. Rye Rye also joined M.I.A. on her international tour in 2010.

On June 7, 2011, she released her second song, "Never Will Be Mine", which featured Robyn. The video for this song was very popular, getting over 2.7 million views in just two days. The song reached number 12 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Rye Rye also toured with Robyn and Katy Perry.

In 2011, Rye Rye released "New Thing". This song was used to show off fashion designer Prabal Gurung's collection and in an Adidas advertisement. In April 2012, her song "Boom Boom" reached number 8 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart.

Leaving N.E.E.T. Recordings

In a 2016 interview, Rye Rye shared that she had left N.E.E.T. Recordings. She said that the label "kinda just folded" because M.I.A. was focusing on her own music and didn't have much time for the label. Rye Rye then planned to release music on her own.

Acting Roles

Rye Rye appeared in the movie 21 Jump Street and its sequel, 22 Jump Street. She also recorded the main theme song for 21 Jump Street with Esthero.

Rye Rye's Artistic Style

Her Style and Inspirations

Rye Rye worked closely with M.I.A. on her album. M.I.A. was the executive producer, co-writer, and stylist, and Rye Rye called her a fashion icon. Rolling Stone described Go! Pop! Bang! as "the hip-hop album most likely to set the club on fire." Paper magazine said the album "will take over car stereos one impossibly ear-catching kinetic party jam at a time." Bust magazine called her album "Baltimore grime at its best." Rye Rye also told Rap-Up TV that she liked clothing designer Jeremy Scott.

Rye Rye finds it easy to write her lyrics. She says listening to the songs' beats over and over in the studio helps her focus. She has also mentioned wanting to work with artists like Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, and Jay-Z. She also hoped to work with a Disney Channel artist to reach younger audiences. She added, "Of course I want to work with artists that can dance, so I have to say that Ciara is someone I really want to work with, as that girl has moves. Not forgetting Ms. Missy Elliott of course, as I think her videos are crazy."

Her Influence

Rye Rye is a muse for fashion designer Prabal Gurung. Music critics have also noticed that the music video for "What You Talking About!?" by Redlight, featuring Ms. Dynamite, has a style similar to M.I.A. and Rye Rye's videos.
