Jeremy Scott (born August 8, 1975) is an American fashion designer. He owns his own fashion label, called Jeremy Scott. From October 2013 to March 2023, he was also the creative director for the famous fashion house Moschino.

Since starting his brand in Paris in 1997, Scott has become known for his fun and unique designs. People often call him "pop culture's most irreverent designer" and "fashion's last rebel."

He is famous for designing clothes, accessories, and shoes for brands like Adidas and Moschino. Jeremy Scott has worked with many celebrities, including Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga. He was one of the first designers to mix high fashion with street style. His designs often use ideas and characters from pop culture.

Growing Up and Learning About Fashion

Jeremy Scott was born in 1975 in Kansas City, Missouri. He spent his childhood partly on a farm and partly in a suburb near Kansas City. From a young age, Jeremy was very interested in fashion.

He went to Hickman Mills High School. When he was 14, he started learning French and took night classes in Japanese. He was determined to become a fashion designer. In high school, he drew fashion designs in his notebooks. He sometimes faced teasing because of his unique dressing style.

He learned about runway fashion from Details magazine. He looked up to designers like Jean Paul Gaultier and Franco Moschino. In 1992, Scott moved to New York City to study fashion design. He attended Pratt Institute, a well-known art and design college. While there, he wore clothes inspired by sci-fi and mixed styles from different eras. Scott also had an internship at Aeffe, the company that owns Moschino.

Jeremy Scott's Fashion Journey

Starting His Brand in Paris

After finishing college in 1996, Scott moved to Paris, France. He was looking for a job in the fashion world. He even had to find creative ways to get food and sometimes slept in the Metro.

He met a public relations person for Jean Paul Gaultier who liked his hair. This led to a job promoting parties at a nightclub. Since he wasn't finding fashion jobs, he decided to start his own brand.

In 1997, his brand, Jeremy Scott, had its first fashion show in a bar in Paris. The show was inspired by a book and film called Crash. Many of the clothes were made from paper hospital gowns. His next show used fabric scraps that looked like garbage bags. These black designs were described as "Blade Runner, trash bags and the apocalypse." Later, this collection was shown in the famous Parisian shop Colette. Colette has sold Jeremy Scott's designs ever since.

His third collection was all white and became a big success. It won awards and caught the attention of important people in fashion. The white show was the first time Devon Aoki walked the runway. She was only 13 years old at the time and later became a supermodel. Björk, a famous singer, wore an angel dress from this white collection for her world tour. Scott also designed costumes for several of her tours.

In 1998, Scott created a show inspired by the 1980s. It featured big hair, shoulder pads, and gold fabrics. This might have been one of the first times a designer brought back the 1980s style. The models wore special heels designed by Christian Louboutin. This show was very different from the simple styles popular at the time.

In 2001, Scott moved from Paris to Los Angeles. This was a surprising choice because Los Angeles was not a major fashion city back then.

Working with Adidas

Jeremy Scott became known as a unique designer with many dedicated fans, especially in Asia. In 2006, he started working with the French company Longchamp. Longchamp makes bags, and Scott designed bags for them.

Scott first worked with Adidas in 2002 on a special project. He designed a silk fabric with money scattered on it, but his own face replaced George Washington's. This design was used on the classic Adidas high-top shoe, the Forum. Only 100 pairs were made.

His most famous collaboration with Adidas began in 2008. Adidas Originals launched Scott's collection of shoes and clothes. This included the JS Wings, which were high-top shoes with wings. He also made JS Bears, which were furry sneakers with teddy bear heads. Rappers like Lil Wayne helped make Scott's shoes very popular. His sneakers are known for being "some of the most eye-catching sneakers ever seen." Over the years, his famous wings appeared on many different Adidas shoes. He also put them on other items, like Smart cars and baby strollers.

In 2011, he worked with Swatch to create three watch designs. These watches were praised for bringing back Swatch's "uber-fun Eighties roots" with Scott's "pop aesthetic, fun twist and overstated form."

Scott appeared in Adidas's 2012 advertising campaign with Nicki Minaj and 2NE1. Madonna's dancers wore Jeremy Scott tracksuits for Adidas Originals during the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show.

In February 2013, Scott had a disagreement about some designs with Santa Cruz Skateboards. They reached an agreement, and Scott stopped making those items.

He launched his first perfume for Adidas on February 1, 2015. The perfume bottle looked like a glass version of his Adidas winged sneakers. In the 2016 movie Suicide Squad, the character Harley Quinn wears high-heeled shoes from Jeremy Scott's 2014 Adidas collection.

Becoming Creative Director at Moschino

In October 2013, Jeremy Scott became the creative director of Moschino. He chose this Italian brand because it had a similar playful and rebellious style. The founder, Franco Moschino, saw fashion as a way to express ideas.

Scott showed his first Moschino collection in fall 2014. He brought back some of Franco Moschino's fun ideas, like using rubbish bags and witty sayings. He also added American pop culture elements, such as McDonald's-inspired handbags and SpongeBob SquarePants fur coats. For example, he made a jacket in McDonald's colors (red and yellow) with a matching handbag that had a golden "M" shaped like a heart. His first Moschino perfume was called Moschino Toy. The bottle looked exactly like a teddy bear, with the spray nozzle hidden under its head.

In 2015, Scott explained his approach to American consumer culture. He said that images like Mickey Mouse are understood everywhere. He often uses humor in his fashion. For example, a 2016 show included a handbag that looked like a box of Marlboro Reds cigarettes. It had the warning Fashion Kills on it.

In August 2015, Scott and Moschino faced a lawsuit about copyright. The lawsuit was settled outside of court.

His Moschino Fall/Winter 2016 collection was inspired by a historical event in Florence from 1497. Dresses in the show featured broken mirrors and parts of a destroyed piano. Some dresses even had smoke machines inside them, creating trails of smoke on the runway.

Scott also created a TV commercial for the Moschino Barbie doll. He wrote and directed it, making it look like toy commercials from the 1980s and 1990s. This commercial gained attention because it was the first Barbie commercial to feature a boy. For the Moschino Spring/Summer 2017 collection, Scott explored how people are focused on 2D screens. He used special techniques to make accessories and leather jackets look flat, like paper dolls.

Jeremy Scott is recognized for helping to make the Moschino brand popular again. He boosted its sales and made it a favorite among fans. On March 20, 2023, he announced that he was leaving his role as Creative Director at Moschino.

Designing for Celebrities

A big part of Jeremy Scott's work involves designing outfits for famous people. These include stars like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Nicki Minaj. Some celebrities, such as Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and CL, have worked with him so often that they are called "the Jezza posse." Scott explained that he understands "the language of pop culture," and these celebrities are important figures in pop culture.

In January 2015, Scott designed the costumes for pop star Katy Perry's performance at the Super Bowl XLIX Half Time show. Perry showed off his custom bustier on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. The designer and singer had started working together ten years earlier.

Rihanna wore a Jeremy Scott denim bra top and skirt in her "We Found Love" music video. The retro-futuristic flight attendant dress worn by Britney Spears in her "Toxic" video was also made by Scott. He designed Lady Gaga's outfit in her "Paparazzi" video. For the 2015 Metropolitan Museum of Art's Anna Wintour Costume Center gala, Scott dressed Perry and Madonna. At the 2016 Met Gala, his outfits were worn by Nicki Minaj and Demi Lovato.

Scott also dressed The Muppets' Miss Piggy for a photoshoot with Kermit the Frog. He has dressed Miss Piggy several times, including for her appearance at his fashion show. As the creative director for the MTV Video Music Awards in 2015, he redesigned the Moonman statuette.

Jeremy Scott has been compared to Andy Warhol, a famous artist. An exhibition in Britain about different ideas of "vulgarity" included Scott's sweet wrapper-themed dresses. These were shown alongside Warhol's famous Souper Dress in the section about pop art.
