What Makes This House Special?
Scientists have studied the wood in the Ryves Holt House using a method called dendrochronology. This is like reading the tree rings to figure out exactly when the wood was cut. This special study showed that the house was built around 1680. For many years, this building was one of the first inns, or places where travelers could stay, in the area.
Who Lived and Worked Here?
One person who ran the inn was Philip Russell. He was known for being a "cupbearer" to William Penn. A cupbearer was an important person who served drinks to a king or important leader.
Later, in 1721, a man named Ryves Holt bought the house. Ryves Holt was a very important person in the early days of Delaware. He became the first Chief Justice of Sussex County. A Chief Justice is the main judge in a court system.
The House Today
Today, the Lewes Historical Society owns and takes care of the Ryves Holt House. They help people learn about its history. On December 30, 2014, the Ryves Holt House became part of the First State National Historical Park. This means it is now a protected historical site that people can visit and learn from.
