São Domingos is a municipality (or concelho) in Cape Verde. It is located on the southeastern part of Santiago Island. The main town of this municipality is also called São Domingos, which used to be known as Várzea da Igreja.
In 2010, about 13,699 people lived here. The total area of São Domingos municipality is 147.5 square kilometers.
The two biggest towns in the municipality are São Domingos and Praia Baixo. São Domingos is the largest, with about 3,000 residents. Other smaller places include Água do Gato, Achada Banana, and Rui Vaz. Rui Vaz is special because it sits on the edge of a very high cliff, about 1 kilometer tall, looking over Ribeirão Galinha.
Even though Rui Vaz and Praia Baixo attract some visitors, tourism is not the main business here. Most people in São Domingos work in farming.
Farms cover the eastern and central parts of the area. This is because water flowing from the center of the island helps keep the soil moist and fertile. The western side is mostly mountains. It's too steep and dry for large farms there. Many small farming villages are found along the main road to Assomada. However, they mostly grow food for themselves, not for selling to other places.
