A Look Back: Sävsjö's History
How the Railway Changed Everything
Sävsjö's modern story really began on October 1, 1864. This was the day the Sävsjö train station opened. Before this, Sävsjö was just a few houses. But the new railway brought many changes.
The train station helped the area grow quickly. More people moved there, and new businesses started. By 1917, the town had grown to 1.56 square kilometers. About 1,481 people lived there.
Growing Industries and Services
Many small businesses set up shop in Sävsjö. Carpenters and other wood industries were very important. The town also got a bank, a pharmacy, and a post office. This showed how much the community was developing.
Becoming a City
In 1947, two smaller areas, Norra Ljunga and Vallsjö, joined together. They formed the City of Sävsjö. Later, in 1971, there was a big change in local government. Sävsjö then became the main town for the much larger Sävsjö Municipality.
