Right now, Licata plays in Serie D.

Discovering Licata Calcio's History

How Licata Football Club Started

The Licata football club began in 1931. It was first named Associazione Calcio Licata. A few local students started the team. They learned about football from Swedish sailors who worked nearby. This is why the team's official colors, yellow and blue, are like the flag of Sweden. In 1967, the club changed its name to Polisportiva Licata.

Climbing the Italian Leagues

Licata first played in a professional league in 1982. This was in Serie C2, which is one of Italy's professional football divisions.

During the 1984–85 season, something amazing happened. Licata, coached by a young Zdeněk Zeman, won the Serie C2 league! This meant they were promoted to Serie C1. What made this even more special was that most of the team's players were young talents from their own youth squad.

In 1988, with Aldo Cerantola as their coach, Licata won the Serie C1/B league. This victory led to their first-ever promotion to Serie B. This was a huge achievement for the club!

Playing in Serie B and Beyond

In their first season in Serie B, Licata did very well. With Giuseppe Papadopulo as coach (later replaced by Francesco Scorsa), they finished in ninth place. They even finished above a famous team like Parma.

Licata also had the honor of playing a Coppa Italia match against AC Milan. This big game took place at the famous Stadio San Siro stadium.

However, the next season was tougher. Licata finished 18th and was relegated back to Serie C1. A couple of seasons later, in 1991–92, they went down to Serie C2. By 1994, the club faced financial problems and went bankrupt.

New Beginnings for the Club

After the bankruptcy in 1994, a new club called Licata AC was formed. It started playing in the regional Eccellenza league. But in 1996, this club also ran into trouble and was cancelled.

Then, a new team called Santos Licata was created. This team later changed its name to Nuovo Licata and finally to its current name, Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Licata Calcio. They started from Promozione, which is the seventh level in the Italian football league system.

In the 2005–06 season, Licata won their group in the Sicilian Eccellenza league. This win meant they returned to Serie D after ten years! In the 2010–11 season, they were promoted again from Eccellenza Sicily group A to Serie D.

Another new club was formed in 2014 after the team faced bankruptcy once more.
