How S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Started
S.U.C.C.E.S.S. began in 1973. A group of people from Hong Kong started it. They wanted to help Chinese people, especially new immigrants, settle in Canada. Maggie Ip was the first leader of the organization.
Over time, more people from Taiwan and mainland China also started using their services. By 1990, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. was helping about 60,000 people. Most of these people were young adults between 20 and 40 years old.
In 1991, the main office was in Vancouver Chinatown. They also had smaller offices in other areas like South Vancouver, Burnaby, and Richmond.
Growing and Helping More People
By 2003, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. had grown a lot. They had 350 employees and 11 offices around the Greater Vancouver area. Their yearly budget was about $16 million, which helped them offer many services.
From 2006 to 2010, Tung Chan was the CEO. He used to be a city councilor in Vancouver. Since 2012, Queenie Choo has been the CEO, leading the organization. Terry Yung, a former police officer, has also served on the group's board. S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is part of the Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver.
In 2014, there was a discussion about signs in Richmond that were only in Chinese. S.U.C.C.E.S.S. had put up some of these signs. Queenie Choo apologized for this and had the signs taken down.
Helping Immigrants Before They Arrive
In 2015, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. opened a special center in Beijing, China. This center helps immigrants even before they come to Canada. It's called the Active Engagement and Integration Project (AEIP).
Around 2015, the Chinese government listed S.U.C.C.E.S.S. as an "Overseas Chinese Services Organization." This shows how important their work is for Chinese people living abroad.
By 2019, the organization's budget had grown to over $50 million. In the same year, the Canadian government gave S.U.C.C.E.S.S. $22.4 million. This money was to help them provide services for immigrants and refugees before they arrive in Canada.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. received a grant of nearly $500,000. This money helped them encourage immigrants in the Metro Vancouver area to get COVID-19 vaccines. As of 2021, most of S.U.C.C.E.S.S.'s funding, over 82 percent, came from the Canadian government.
