Professor S. B. S. Abayakoon is an important leader in Sri Lanka. He is currently the chairman of the Engineering Council Sri Lanka (ECSL). This council helps guide engineers in the country. He was also the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, which is a big university in Sri Lanka.
Before becoming Vice-Chancellor, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering for over four years. He is a Senior Professor of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Peradeniya. He became the 20th Vice-Chancellor of the university in August 2009. He went to St. Sylvester's College in Kandy for his early schooling.
His Journey in Education
Professor Abayakoon started his education at St. Sylvester's College in Kandy. After that, he went to the University of Peradeniya. He studied engineering there. In 1979, he earned his bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He did very well, graduating with First Class Honours.
He continued his studies abroad. He went to the University of British Columbia in Canada. There, he earned two more advanced degrees. He received his Master of Applied Science in 1983. Later, in 1987, he completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Leading the University
Professor Abayakoon has held many important roles. As Vice-Chancellor, he was like the main leader of the University of Peradeniya. This role involves guiding the university and its students. He helped make sure the university ran smoothly. He also taught Civil Engineering to many students.
