Prof. S. B. S. Abayakoon is an important leader in Sri Lanka. He is currently the Chairman of the Engineering Council Sri Lanka (ECSL). He also serves as the Governor of the Central Province.

Before these roles, he was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. A Vice-Chancellor is like the main boss of a university. He was the 20th person to hold this position, starting in August 2009. Before becoming Vice-Chancellor, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering for about four and a half years. He is also a Senior Professor of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya.

Prof. Abayakoon went to school at St. Sylvester's College in Kandy for his primary and secondary education.

Education and Early Career

Learning at St. Sylvester's College

Prof. Abayakoon started his education at St. Sylvester's College in Kandy. This is where he completed his primary and secondary schooling.

University Studies in Engineering

After school, he went to the University of Peradeniya. He studied engineering there. In 1979, he earned his first degree, a bachelor's degree, in Civil Engineering. He did very well, graduating with First Class Honours. This means he was one of the top students in his class.

Advanced Degrees from Canada

Prof. Abayakoon continued his studies abroad. He went to the University of British Columbia in Canada. There, he earned two more advanced degrees. He received his Master of Applied Science degree in 1983. Later, he completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in 1987. These degrees helped him become an expert in Civil Engineering.

Leadership Roles and Contributions

Leading the University of Peradeniya

Prof. Abayakoon served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya. This is a very important job. It means he was in charge of running the entire university. He held this position from August 2009 until 2012. Before that, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. A Dean is the head of a specific department or faculty within a university.

Chairman of Engineering Council Sri Lanka

Since August 2018, Prof. Abayakoon has been the Chairman of the Engineering Council Sri Lanka (ECSL). This council helps to make sure that engineering in Sri Lanka is done well. It sets standards for engineers and helps them get licensed.

Governor of Central Province

Prof. Abayakoon also holds the position of Governor of the Central Province. This is a key role in the government of Sri Lanka. A Governor helps to manage the affairs of a province.
