Subramaniam Sivanayagam (Tamil: சுப்பிரமணியம் சிவநாயகம்; born September 7, 1930 – died November 29, 2010) was an important journalist and writer from Sri Lanka. He was known for being the editor of several newspapers and journals. These included the Saturday Review, Tamil Nation, and Hot Spring.

Early Life and Education

S. Sivanayagam was born on September 7, 1930. His birthplace was Kokkuvil in northern Ceylon, which is now Sri Lanka. His father was Sattanathar Subramaniam from Vannarpannai. His mother was Kanmaniammal from Kokkuvil.

He went to school at Kokkuvil Hindu College. Later, he studied at Jaffna College. He also started studying law at Ceylon Law College. However, he left after two years without finishing his degree.

Sivanayagam married Subadradevi. She was the daughter of A. Navaratnarajah. They had two daughters together. Their names were Sivanangai and Sivanarayani.

Journalism Career

Sivanayagam started his career in journalism in 1953. He joined the team at the Ceylon Daily News. Later, he wrote a regular column for The Times of Ceylon. From 1961 to 1969, he worked for the Daily Mirror. He also worked for J. Walter Thompsons and the Ceylon Tourist Board.

In January 1982, Sivanayagam became the first editor of the Saturday Review. This was a new newspaper. After some difficult events in 1983, the Sri Lankan government stopped the Saturday Review. Sivanayagam then moved to Madras (now Chennai) in India.

In Madras, he led the Tamil Information Centre. He also worked with the Tamil Information and Research Institute. He wrote many articles for different journals. In October 1990, he became the editor of a new journal called Tamil Nation.

After a sad event in May 1991, Sivanayagam was arrested. He was held without any specific charges. He faced very tough conditions while imprisoned. After he was released, Sivanayagam moved to France in 1993 to seek safety.

Later Life and Books

While living in France, Sivanayagam started a new journal. He named it Hot Spring and was its editor. Later, he moved to London, England.

He also wrote two important books. The first book, The Pen and the Gun, was published in 2001. His second book, Sri Lanka — Witness to History — A Journalist’s Memoirs, came out in 2005.

Sivanayagam returned to Colombo after he became ill with bone cancer. He passed away on November 29, 2010, in Colombo.
