How SABMiller Started
The story of SABMiller began in 1895. It started as a company called South African Breweries. This company was created to serve the many miners and people looking for gold near Johannesburg, South Africa. Just two years later, it became the first industrial company to be listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. This meant its shares could be bought and sold there.
Growing Bigger Around the World
From the early 1990s, the company started to grow a lot. It bought many other companies in different countries. This helped it expand into new and developed markets. In 1999, it created a new main company in the UK called SAB plc. It then moved its main listing to the London Stock Exchange.
In May 2002, SAB plc bought a big American company called Miller Brewing. After this purchase, the company changed its name to SABMiller plc.
A Big Change for SABMiller
SABMiller was a very important company on the London Stock Exchange. It was one of the largest companies listed there. It also had a second listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
In October 2015, another huge brewing company, Anheuser-Busch InBev, announced big plans. They wanted to buy SABMiller. This was a very large deal, worth billions of dollars. The acquisition was completed in 2016.
