SATE (musician) facts for kids
SATE, whose real name is Saidah Baba Talibah, is a rock singer from Toronto, Canada. She is known for her powerful music. Her album The Fool, released in 2021, was even nominated for a Juno Award. This award is one of Canada's biggest music honors.
Early Life and Music
SATE grew up surrounded by music. Her mother was Salome Bey, a very famous Canadian blues and jazz singer. SATE started performing with her mother when she was young. Their group was called Salome Bey and the Relatives.
In the 1990s, SATE joined a funk rock band called Blaxäm. She was a singer in the band with her sister Tuku. Blaxäm released a short album called Kiss My Afro in 1998. However, the band broke up before they could release a full album.
Solo Career and New Name
SATE continued to make music on her own. In 2011, she released her first solo album called (S)cream. During this time, she was inspired by artists from the Black Rock Coalition. These artists blend different music styles.
In 2014, SATE performed at the Luminato Festival in Toronto. She shared the stage with the band TV on the Radio. The next year, in 2015, she was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award. This award was for her acting in a musical play called What Makes a Man.
Later, she decided to change her stage name to SATE. She felt that her original name made people think her music was only world music. But her music mixes many styles. It combines soul and funk with blues rock and punk rock.
As SATE, she released the album RedBlack&Blue in 2016. One song from this album, "Know My Name," was used in ads for Sportsnet.
Her album The Fool came out in 2021. The music video for her song "Nobody" features the band The OBGMs. Another song on the album, "Guardian Angel," is very special. It's a recording of SATE singing with her mother when SATE was a child. She found this recording after her mother passed away in 2020.
