SKS facts for kids
The SKS is a type of rifle that can fire bullets one after another with just one pull of the trigger. It was designed a long time ago in 1943 in the Soviet Union, which was a big country that included Russia. A man named Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov created it.
In the 1950s, a newer rifle called the AK-47 started to replace the SKS. Even so, the SKS was still used for many years as a backup weapon. Today, it is often used for special events like parades, where it is called a ceremonial weapon.
The SKS is also very popular with people who collect old military items. You can find it in countries like the United States, Canada, and New Zealand. It was one of the first weapons to use a special type of bullet called the M-43 7.62×39mm round. This same bullet was also used later in the AK-47.
