SV Mattersburg was a football club from Mattersburg, a town in Burgenland, Austria. The club played in the top Austrian football league for many years. They were known for having a strong fan base.

The History of SV Mattersburg

The SV Mattersburg football club started in 1922. Their home stadium was the Pappelstadion, which could hold 17,100 fans. This was a very large stadium for a town with only about 6,300 people!

Playing in the Top League

The team joined the Austrian Bundesliga, Austria's highest football league, in the 2003–04 season. They quickly became popular. In the 2004–05 season, SV Mattersburg had the second-highest average number of fans at their games in all of Austria.

Best Season Ever

The 2006–07 season was the best in the club's history. SV Mattersburg finished third in the Bundesliga. This was their highest-ever position in the league. It was a big achievement for the team and their fans.

Why Did the Club Close?

Sadly, SV Mattersburg had to close down in August 2020. This happened after their main financial supporter, a local bank, faced serious problems. The bank was closed because of an accounting scandal. Without this financial help, the football club could no longer continue.
