He made a surprising return to the national team in 2008 for the Euro 2008 tournament. He scored Austria's first-ever goal in the European Championship. At the time, he was the oldest goalscorer in the tournament's history, a record later broken by Luka Modrić in Euro 2024.

1998 FIFA World Cup

Vastić played in the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. He played in all three of Austria's group matches. In their second match, he scored a goal in the last minute to make it a 1–1 draw against Chile. Even with his goal, Austria was eliminated in the first round after two draws and one loss.

Euro 2008 Appearance

He made his comeback in a friendly match against Nigeria and was chosen for the final squad. He was the oldest player in the tournament.

On June 12, Vastić played in Austria's second match of the tournament, a 1–1 draw with Poland. He scored Austria's first goal in the UEFA European Championship finals from a penalty kick in injury time. This made him the oldest goalscorer in the history of the European Championship finals at the time.
