Ivica Vastić, born on September 29, 1969, is a famous retired football player from Austria. He was born in Croatia but became an Austrian citizen. Ivica played as a midfielder and a striker, scoring many goals. He played for clubs in Croatia, Austria, and Japan.

Vastić also played for the Austria national football team. He represented his country in big tournaments like the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2008. After retiring as a player, he became a football coach. He is currently the youth head coach for HNK Šibenik U19.

Playing Career Highlights

Ivica Vastić started his football journey in his hometown of Split, Croatia. He played for a local club called Jugovinil. Later, he joined RNK Split, which was playing in the third division of Yugoslav football.

In 1991, Ivica moved to Austria. He signed with First Vienna FC and continued his career there. He also played for other Austrian teams like VSE St. Pölten and Admira Wacker Mödling. For a short time, he played in Germany for Bundesliga team MSV Duisburg.

Time with Sturm Graz

Ivica Vastić had his most successful time playing for Sturm Graz. He was with the club from 1994 to 2002. During these years, he helped Sturm Graz win the Austrian Bundesliga two times in a row, in 1998 and 1999.

He also helped them win the Austrian Cup three times: in 1996, 1997, and 1999. Vastić also played in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League with Sturm Graz. This is a very important competition for top European clubs.

Playing in Japan and Return to Austria

After his time at Sturm Graz, Vastić played for one season in Japan. He joined the club Nagoya Grampus Eight. After that, he came back to Austria.

He played for Austria Vienna for two seasons. Then, in 2005, he joined LASK. He was a top scorer for LASK in the Erste Liga, which is Austria's second division. He scored 42 goals in 62 games between 2005 and 2007.

Vastić helped LASK get promoted to the Austrian Bundesliga in 2007. He was also the top scorer for LASK in the 2007/2008 season, scoring 13 goals. He announced his retirement from professional football on May 18, 2009.

International Football for Austria

Ivica Vastić became an Austrian citizen in 1996. After that, he started playing for the Austria national football team. He played 50 games for Austria and scored 14 goals.

He was a surprise choice for the Euro 2008 team. In that tournament, he scored Austria's first-ever goal in the European Championship. He also became the oldest goalscorer in the tournament's history at that time.

1998 FIFA World Cup

Vastić played in his first major tournament for Austria at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. He played in all three of Austria's group matches. UEFA Euro 2008

On April 24, 2008, Vastić was surprisingly called up to Austria's team for UEFA Euro 2008. He hadn't played for the national team in over two years. He made his comeback in a friendly match against Nigeria. He was the oldest player in the Euro 2008 squad.

On June 8, he played in Austria's first Euro 2008 match against his home country, Croatia. On June 12, he played in Austria's second match, a 1–1 draw with Poland. In this game, he scored Austria's first goal in the European Championship finals. He scored from a penalty kick in injury time. This made him the oldest goalscorer in the history of the European Championship finals at that time.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Ivica Vastić started his coaching career.

FC Waidhofen/Ybbs

On June 16, 2009, Vastić became the head coach of FC Waidhofen/Ybbs. This team played in the Regionalliga Ost. He had a great start, winning the league in the 2009/10 season.

Austria Wien

In the summer of 2010, Vastić moved to coach the amateur team of Austria Wien. In December 2011, he was promoted to manage the first team of Austria Wien. He coached the team until May 2012.

SV Mattersburg

Vastić became the head coach of SV Mattersburg on December 20, 2013. He signed a contract until the end of the season, with a chance to stay for two more years. He continued coaching Mattersburg until January 2017.

Personal Life

Ivica Vastić is married to his wife, Annie. They have been married for over 20 years. They have three children together. His oldest son, Toni, also became a professional football player.
