Sabeer Bhatia is a famous Indian American businessman. He is best known for creating Hotmail.com in 1996. Hotmail was one of the very first free email services on the internet. Today, Hotmail is part of Outlook.com. In 2021, Sabeer also helped start a company called ShowReel. ShowReel began by offering short videos for people looking for jobs. It has since become an online course that uses AI to teach about starting a business.

Early Life and Education
Sabeer Bhatia was born on December 30, 1968. His birthplace was Chandigarh, India. His father, Baldev Bhatia, was a captain in the Indian Army. His mother, Daman Bhatia, worked at the Central Bank of India.
Where Sabeer Bhatia Studied
Sabeer went to school in India. He studied at The Bishop's School in Pune. He also attended St. Joseph's Boys' High School in Bengaluru. Later, he went to St. Joseph's Pre-University College, also in Bengaluru.
In 1985, Sabeer started studying at BITS Pilani. After two years, he won a special scholarship. This allowed him to transfer to the California Institute of Technology in the United States. There, he earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He then continued his studies at Stanford University. He received his master's degree in electrical engineering from Stanford.

After finishing his studies, Sabeer Bhatia worked briefly at Apple Inc.. He was a hardware engineer there. He also worked at a company called Firepower Systems Inc.
Creating Hotmail
On July 4, 1996, Sabeer Bhatia and his friend Jack Smith launched Hotmail. They chose American Independence Day for the launch. This was to show that Hotmail offered "freedom" from old email services. Before Hotmail, you often had to use email from your internet provider. Hotmail allowed people to check their email from any computer in the world.
Sabeer was the president and CEO of Hotmail. In 1998, Microsoft bought Hotmail. The deal was worth about $400 million.
Other Business Ventures
After Hotmail, Sabeer Bhatia started other companies. One was a free messaging service called JaxtrSMS. He hoped JaxtrSMS would change text messaging (SMS) like Hotmail changed email. He thought it would make SMS free for users. However, JaxtrSMS did not become as successful as Hotmail.
In 2006, Sabeer suggested building a new city in northern India. He called it "Nano City." He wanted it to be like Silicon Valley in the United States. The government of Haryana approved the idea in September 2006. But by 2010, the project had not started. The government agency later canceled it.
More recently, Sabeer has invested in other technology companies. These include software for email teamwork and a company that helps with online selling.

Sabeer Bhatia comes from a Sindhi family background.
He married Tanya Sharma in 2008. They had a daughter named Ariana. Their marriage later ended in 2013.
