Sabeer Bhatia's Career Journey
Before creating Hotmail, Sabeer Bhatia worked as an engineer. He worked for companies like Apple Inc. and Firepower Systems Inc. He learned a lot about technology there.
Starting Hotmail
Sabeer Bhatia had a big idea with his friend, Jack Smith. They wanted to create a free email service. This service would let people check their emails from any computer, anywhere in the world. They launched Hotmail on July 4, 1996. This date is American Independence Day. They chose it to show that Hotmail offered "freedom" from old email systems. Before Hotmail, you often had to use your internet provider's email.
As the leader of Hotmail, Sabeer Bhatia helped it grow very fast. In 1998, a big company called Microsoft bought Hotmail. It was bought for about $400 million. This was a huge success for Sabeer Bhatia.
After Hotmail
After Hotmail, Sabeer Bhatia continued to create new things. He started a free messaging service called JaxtrSMS. He hoped JaxtrSMS would change text messaging (SMS) like Hotmail changed email. He believed it would let people send messages for free. This would make phone companies earn less from SMS. However, it would encourage people to buy more data plans. JaxtrSMS did not become as successful as Hotmail.
Later, Sabeer Bhatia invested in other technology companies. These included a company for email teamwork software called ccZen. He also invested in E-junkie, which helps people sell things online.
